Just as keeping a relationship with friends, family members or your spouse at a shallow or superficial level will get dry, predictable and unfulfilling, so will a Christian walk. Staying in the shallows of our relationship with God, or in elements of our Christian walk, will leave us with shallow roots and a lack of quality fruit. However, if we are to consciously pursue a more engaged experience, then we can expect to find greater nutrients for the future, more stability during the storms of life and be more resistant to the distractions the world throws at us.
Colossians 2:6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.
Growing out roots down into him is to be a continual thing. Where we never stop to get comfortable or think that we have made it, but we choose to not let our relationship with God get stagnant. Instead, we seek God in a deeper (more open, vulnerable, trust in Him, more intentional study) way. So this year, no matter what stage of your walk with God you are in, (a new Christian or you’ve walked with God for decades), take the time to look at how you are going to “dig deeper” this year.
